Essay 4

My fourth essay is going to be about underground and overhead power lines. I will try to persuade my readers that overhead power lines are better than underground. I was originally going to take the side of underground power lines, but I felt that overhead would seem more logical after doing research.

  1. I am going to support overhead power lines in my argument unless I find information that persuades me to defend underground power lines.

  2. Right now, my three points are going to be the cost, convenience (If I can't find enough information for convenience, I will switch to reliability.), and durability.

  3. I don't know that much, if anything at all, about this topic. My opinion is that underground power lines make streets look neater, but I don't know if I'll have information to prove that in my paper. If I can find some, I will. I'm not sure, but I think overhead power lines are cheaper to set up and can be set up easier and faster than underground ones.

  4. I need to know a lot about my topic. I plan to find out whether or not overhead power lines are cheaper, easier, and less time consuming to set up than underground ones. Time consuming and difficulty will fall under the convenience point of my essay. If I can't find information regarding time and difficulty, I will search for information regarding the reliability of the two different systems. Durability of the systems will also be what I plan to find out.

  5. I have spent time searching for sources and roaming through the content to find good, usable information. I have finished roaming through five sources so far. Two of them have given me plenty of information. I also know for sure that costs is going to be one of my three points. After searching through the five sources, I have decided that installation will be another point. I have enough information about the installation of underground power lines versus overhead power lines to make it a major point. The third point, which was originally going to be durability, may have to change. I haven't found that much, if any, information about durability. I have come across a small amount of information regarding reliability though. However, I don't know if I have enough information to make that a major point. I have also come across information that could be put under convenience, but that point may be in the same boat as reliability. I'll have to roam through my other sources to see what comes up. If I find a third point that has more information than reliability and convenience, I'll make that my final subject of persuasion. If not, I'll combine whatever information I have left under one point. I can fit reliability under convenience one way or another.

  6. I have spent a few more hours going through the sources I have now and wrote down all of the information I will be using. There may be some more from those sources, but I think I'm good with what I already have from them. I'm not sure if I'm completely done researching for information, but I do know that I have plenty of information. I only have 9 sources though. I'm also not sure if I have enough information for both sides of the argument, but I won't know for sure until I type out my first draft.

  7. I have finally finalized my focus. I decided what my focus was possibly going to be a week or so ago but finalized in the past few hours.

  8. My thesis statement:

Overhead and underground power lines differ in the cost of installing the power lines, the effects resulting from installing the two different systems, and the reliability each system has.

  9. I have topic sentences for my points, but they aren't going to be final. I just wrote my topic sentences now to get it out of the way and to at least give an idea of what they are going to be. I have topic sentences for both sides of all my points of persuasion.

    Topic Sentences:

Using overhead power lines and taking the necessary steps to install overhead power lines saves more money than burying power lines and using the steps that are in association.
Underground power lines cost more, but they are less prone to weather damage.
Installing overhead power lines saves time and resources when repairs or improvements need to be made.
Burying the power lines allows the location where the power lines are to appear cleaner and more pleasing to the eye.
Overhead power lines have a higher reliability rating than underground ones.
Underground power lines aren’t made as strong as overhead power lines since weather doesn’t have to be considered as much as when installing the underground power lines.

I do plan on changing at least one of these, if not all of them. They're here just to give an idea of what I am going to talk about.
